Plot/ Narrative

The plot of 'On The Run' was influenced by the case studies i look at, around the genre of short film, horror. It was mainly a hybrid because of the mix of genres we have to make it more interesting, enetertaining and complex than a traditional horror film. I used "BEN" mainly because it is also a short film, it is the same genre and it uses similar locations like the forest. Theres a sense of thrill and surprise also. Because she is running from 'Ben' someone who we don't see, who isn't in the picture like a made up character. And in m film 'On The Run' the runner is running away from the serial killer in the end, however we wanted to make it more interesting by switching and reversing the roles. Shocking the audience so it isn't a stereotypical horror film where you know who the killer is. We changed it also by adding music and sound effects muting the sound and dialogue the non-digetic sounds made it very relaistic and easy to follow, especially when we used a digetic voice over for the radio broadcast news. Another case study we used to distinguish what the plot would be is "The Purge" trailer  it is a Horror/Action film (Genre), I liked this film because it is diferent from generic short film trailers. As it uses a variety of camera shots and angles like a BIrds eye view shot, they use a variety of props as well and make up to scare the viewers for example, the Masks where as BEN uses more blood and gruesome props. I believe that the Purge is more realistic and that is what we wanted to create in our film, a sense of realism. I was also inspired by the case study "The Desk" short film because it was 100% horror it was a hybrid a bit of everything it was really gripping and during the end when we found out what was going on exactly, and who was the person writing on the desk, i thought it was a very unique idea compared to the typical dragging into  woods and ghostly kind of storylines. However, in the beginning it was a bit confusing but then we realised at the end of it, the real twist made us want to use a twist even more.

The plot also relates to Todorov's theory because we used a common structure in the short film, as we started of with a stable equilibrium then progressed on to a disequillibrium model, then there was a new equilibrium, and then it wasn't settled as the role in the characters subverted. and there was new way to the ending. Our film clearly portrays Todorov's 5 stage model. As we have the establishment of a serial killer on the loose , the development of the narrative when the serial killer chases the runner, then there is the complication where the roles changed when the runner was kidnapped as the audience would of been thinking whats happening and who is who. The Action Climax is demonstrated when The runner, sets herself free and knocks the first killer out. As the audience now know who is who, and what is happening, Then during the end we demonstrate the resolution of the short film where shorai rings the boss and states she has her.  Another theory that relates to the plot of my short film is the Levi Strauss theory that reflects the good vs bad hypothesis, but with a change as the character roles subvert throughout the short film. this is also related to the Binary opposites theory because the roles are again reversed, unexpectantly surprising the norms of traditional films of this genre, and the norms of women in cultural society.

HAVE YOU SUBVERTED CODES AND CONVENTIONS OR REINFORCE EXISTING FORMS AND CONVENTIONS?

The codes and conventions we have subverted and used in the short film consists of the narrative and character roles, that were dramatically subverted throughout the ending of the film, as explained in the plot and narrative. The narrative was not subverted and nothing else was really subverted as we used the generic features of a horror film, however, we did subvert it unconciously because the horror film when shown in the audience feedback (featured on my blog) it was generally entertaining more than scary so it was like a parody of a short film, but it just made it more interesting so we didn't mind. This was shown in the same case studies as before in the desk as there was a change in the narrative, the fact it is like a parody could relate to the short film " Trapped" (2011) because it is a horror film but it is also funny ( not taken very seriously) the actual film itself is about a night of baby sitting turning to cold terror when a young woman realizes that the child's eerily lifelike doll collection may explain the mysterious disappearance of the previous sitters.

The theories that relate to the subverted character roles and genre is The uses and gratifications moel  because it is what the audience does with the media, they made it into a paradoy and they knew and understood the subverison of the characters. Another theory that can relate to the subversion of the codes and conventions is by Richard Kilborn (1987) because he demonstrates how the media is entertaining, and there is social inegration because of the killers being female as you wouln't expect them to be, as it is prodimenently males that is socially constructed. And the audience also establish the fact that it is entertaining more than thrilling. As well as subverting we have reinforced forms ans conventions as well with typical camera shots, settings and props we havent gone off the genre completely.

TYPICAL AND MODES OF REALISM OR FANTASY

My short film on the run uses both typical and non typical conventions creating realism, and not fantasy as we didn't use any graphic animaions or special effects of any sort. We portray typicalness in our narrative as it is a little cliche from the typical wood scene setting to the typical alone jogger in the woods. We just dont have a typical ending from that genre. modes of realism are used from the props and joggers as we did act it but it wasn't 100% staged, it is believable from the camera shots, and non digetic sounds. Espeically the news cast using the digetic sound to create realism that it is an actual news report. The case studies that can relate to this is the case study "BEN" bcause it is set out in real settings and people creating realism and the person following her isn't even present so it craetes realism and expects the audience to follow along and understand what is going on. A theory associated with this is a theory by James Lull (1990) as the structure is very regulative, keeping the pattern of times,  making it realistic, going from day to evening or afternoon. We also use the audience theory of reception because the text encodedx by the producer and decoded by the reader/ audience in order for them to understand or interpreate it in whatever way they wish, what  is real to them. The only thing that isn't so typical is the twist and the female killers.
